Louisville's Jared Swopshire to Transfer to Northwestern for Final Season

This is how excited Jared Swopshire is to play for Northwestern.

In news out of left field, Northwestern will pick up a player from a Louisville squad that made the Final Four this past season. Jared Swopshire, a 6-foot-8 forward from St. Louis, will play his final season at Northwestern, according to C.L. Brown of the Louisville Courier-Journal.

Swopshire started as a sophomore but sat out his junior year with a groin injury. When he came back this year, he had been more or less displaced in the rotation by Chase Benahan, and in February, Rick Pitino announced the redshirt junior would transfer after graduating from Louisville, thanks to Pitino's mismanagement of scholarships leaving Swopshire without one for the upcoming season. Swopshire will be a grad student, which means he'd likely be able to play right away despite transferring. Even if you watched the Cardinals go deep in the tourney, you probably didn't see much of Swopshire - he didn't score in the National Semifinal - but he did put up six on two threes against Michigan State. He also had eight points and 12 rebounds - 12 rebounds! - against No. 9 Marquette in the Big East Tournament, which is interesting because when's the last time any Northwestern big had 12 rebounds?

This, suffice it to say, is good news. Northwestern will now have two incoming big men with Swopshire and Nikola Cerina, giving Northwestern a pretty solid front line after losing all their rotation big men from last season. Swopshire only averaged 3.4 points and 3.0 rebounds this past season, but proved he could get it done by averaging a solid 7.5 points and 6.1 rebounds as a sophomore. You'd have to assume Swopshire is an immediate candidate to start at the power forward spot.

Also, he's played in an NCAA Tournament game! We'll have more on Swopshire's transfer in the upcoming days.
