Stats of the Week - Northwestern @ Nebraska

There's not much good to discuss following NU's overtime loss in Iowa City on Saturday, but I'll do the best that I can.

One thing not to lose sight of, at least in the past two games, is the solid play from the Northwestern defense. Under Fitz, the Wildcats have held 33 opponents to fewer than 20 points (which is 34% of the games he's coached), and this past game was just the 2nd time NU has lost a game when holding its opponent to under 20 (that's a 31-2 record in such games) and the first time since the 17-3 loss to No. 2 Michigan in 2006.

The NU offense has clearly had some problems over the past three weeks, as this is the first time that NU has been held to under 20 points in 3 consecutive weeks since 2007 (also, NU's last season without a bowl trip): NU score 14, 7, and 16 points against Duke, Ohio State, and Michigan, respectively. The Wildcats haven't been held to under 20 points in 4 consecutive games since 2003 (during which NU went 3-9).

On positive streak is on the line this week, as NU has carried a .500 or better record for 25 consecutive games. Under Fitz, Northwestern has had a .500 or better record coming into 86.7% of the games it has played.

Thank goodness it's November! As many have noted, under Fitz, NU is 12-21 in October (0.364) but is 15-9 (0.625) in November. The Wildcats have won at least 1 November game each season under Fitz and have averaged 2.1 wins per season in that month. Also, the 'Cats have knocked off 5 ranked teams in November since Fitz has been head coach, which constitutes all of NU's wins over ranked teams during that span.

Also, Fitz has done well in November road games, with the 'Cats going 7-4 during his tenure (8-3 ATS), and that's despite being an underdog in all 11 of those games, by an average of 11.7 points per game.

The 'Cats will appear on the Big Ten Network again this week, where NU has also fared well in November, going 7-1 in November games televised on BTN (the only loss coming at home to MSU in the final regular season game in 2011).

The line currently has Nebraska favored by 7.5, which also bodes well for the 'Cats: NU is 9-4 under Fitz in November games where NU as a single-digit underdog.
