I am a Michigan alum who now lives in Evanston and has season tickets for Northwestern basketball. As long as Michigan is not in town I am all in Purple. The following are some suggestions that i think might create a more lively and fun atmosphere at basketball games and I'm curious what you think of them...
- Clever or not so clever chants after a certain player on the Wildcats score. For example, "Oh la la" after an Alex Olah basket.
- Singling out a player on the opposing team to raucously boo every time he gets the ball.
- At Michigan, one of the most popular cheers we do is one section yells "go" pointing to another section who responds "blue". I think it would be really fun if we incorporate this at Northwestern sporting events substituting "blue" with 'purple". I assume some people will fear that its ripping off Michigan and thus is uncool. In response to that, most schools get many of their favorite cheers from copying others. For example, Almost every college basketball student section now jumps up and down after a made basket, including Michigan, which was once known as something unique to Cameron Indoor Stadium. Another Duke knock-off is how student sections lift their arms during a player's free throw and then bring them down saying swoosh after he makes it.
Whether or not you think these are good ideas I'm curious what other Northwestern fans think would be good ways to liven the atmosphere at Northwestern basketball games despite having a team that may end up in last place in the Big 10 this year and despite hosting away fan bases that outnumber the home fans?
