Former Northwestern Running Back Jason Wright Retires from NFL's Arizona Cardinals

Jason Wright didn't do bad for an undrafted free agent. 

After seven years in the NFL, the 29-year-old is calling it quits and fulfilling Northwestern stereotypes by pursuing an MBA at the University of Chicago, leaving Tyrell Sutton the sole undrafted NU running back left in the still locked-out organization.

Cats fans will remember Wright for his two seasons at starting running back in 2002 and 2003, in which he managed to make his way up to the fourth-leading rusher in school history, closing his career by hanging 251 and four touchdowns on Illinois, then 237 in the Motor City Bowl against Bowling Green. (He didn't earn the top spot on the all-Big Ten team thanks to Marion Barber III. Screw that guy.) He put up 1,000 yards in both of his seasons as a starter and notched at least 12 touchdowns both years, including 20 in his senior campaign.

In the pros, he wasn't as big a dealbreaker: He didn't catch on with his first team, the Atlanta Falcons, but after a few seasons of anonymity earned a role getting a decent amount of carries behind Reuben Droughns and Jamal Lewis in 2006-2007, getting some starts when those two were injured. With the Cardinals, most of his work has been on special teams, but he's gotten a few touches here and there.

It seems as if the Cardinals weren't going to bring him back - fourth running backs can be superfluous, but he could have pursued football, choosing to move on and retire on his own terms. He was well-liked in the locker room and even earned a post as a captain on the Cardinals. He didn't do much in terms of numbers in the league - just a few spot starts and a lot of special teams play- but his career has been one of the more fruitful for an NU grad in the 21st century. Certainly amassed more fantasy points than any other NU player.
