Women's basketball: MSU 72, Northwestern 58

Before we get all caught up in the euphoria of the men's basketball game against Iowa, a little downer news. The women's team just lost its fifth out its last six games, 72-58, against NCAA bubble squad Michigan State. It's pretty safe to say now that the Wildcats' tournament hopes are done, with their record at 13-11 overall, 3-8 in the Big Ten, barring a major run in the conference tournament.

Not much to write home about with this game. The Wildcats were leading 22-16 in the first half, before it all imploded. Turnovers hurt, as they have all season. The shooting wasn't there. Morgan Jones had a rough day, scoring just 6 points on 2-14 shooting, before fouling out. But why pick on her? Collectively, the team shot 37.5% from the field and a craptacular 50% from the line, and Kendall Hackney and Karly Roser also had the dubious distinction of fouling out. Tailor Jones had a nice game off the bench, though, with 13 points and 7 boards.

Next game up is against Big Ten title contender Penn State on Sunday.

In the meantime, let's hope the men's team gives us a real good time tonight.
