Northwestern women's basketball: Morgan Jones transfers to Florida State

Morgan Jones, a highly touted freshman who announced in April she was transferring from Northwestern, has chosen Florida State, according to her Twitter account.

Jones is a 6'2" wing who averaged 13.9 points and 6.0 rebounds per game, starting 29 games, and she was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman team. But she struggled with her shot, converting just 31.5% of her field goal attempts, and though she had the green light from the coaching staff to shoot often, she didn't really seem to mesh with the offense.

"I just don't think it was the best fit for me over the next three years," she told the Tallahassee Democrat. "I wanted to make sure I was somewhere I was going to love, and really be a part of something special."

Jones is an Orlando, Florida, native, so the transfer puts her closer to home. She also considered Louisiana State and Kentucky. She was the most heralded recruit that head coach Joe McKeown has brought to NU, a five-star prospect ranked the ninth-best in her class by ESPN HoopGurlz when she committed.

It's been a somewhat strange relationship NU and McKeown have had with Jones and her sister, Tailor, a backup guard who is graduating. Tailor spent her first year as a Florida Gator and then transferred to NU after her freshman year. After sitting out a year due to NCAA transfer rules, she played two years for NU but then also opted not to return to Evanston next year, even though she had a year of eligibility left.

At any rate, best of luck to Morgan and Tailor.

In other women's basketball news, McKeown announced that Akron assistant Sam Dixon will be joining his staff. Dixon has been at Akron for the last two years, and before that was head coach at Furman for eight years. He's also served as an assistant for USA Basketball's U20 and U21 teams.

NU still has one other assistant coach opening. The Wildcats lost top assistant Ali Jacques, who became head coach at Siena, and also Caroline McCombs, who took an assistant position with Auburn. Assistant coach Tennille Adams remains with the Wildcats.

The Wildcats are coming off a 14-16 season (4-12 in Big Ten play), McKeown's fourth at NU.
