Cool baseball stuff! Even though the Cats finished... well... 11th... out of... 11 in the Big Ten, baseball is still a sport!
First off, Northwestern's catcher Geoff Rowan was picked in the 37th round by the Tampa Bay Rays. Rowan was on the Johnny Bench Watch List for the nation's best catchers, hitting .291 and throwing out 41 percent of baserunners. He'll join Cubs prospect Chad Noble as a NU grad playing catcher in the minors. Rowan's versatile, also having played a lot of outfield when Noble was at NU.
Secondly, George Kontos got called up to the San Francisco Giants. Kontos had made a few spot appearances for the Yankees last season - 1918! 1918! - after September call-ups, but this is his first spot on a 25-man roster. The Giants have had bullpen struggles of late - well, mainly Steve Edelfsen, the guy who was optioned down to Triple-A to make room for him - so the former 5th-round draft pick might be of serious help to the G-Men. (Does anybody call him that?) He joins J.A. Happ as former NU hurlers in the majors.
So that's that! Enjoy your weekends n stuff! Back with countdown stuff later.
