Northwestern Notebook 8/10: New Commit and More Links

by Kevin Trahan (@k_trahan)

New Commit

Northwestern picked up its 17th commit of the class of 2013 on Thursday with the addition of three-star running back/safety Godwin Igwebuike. A native of Pickerington, Ohio (the same hometown as Brian Peters), Igwebuike had an impressive list of offers, including Michigan State, Wisconsin and West Virginia, according to Scout.

“When they offered me, they told me offense or defense they just want me on the team,” Igwebuike told Scout. “Having the option to play on both sides of the ball was a big factor for me.”

Obviously this is a big pickup for NU considering the other offers that Igwebuike had. If the Wildcats want to compete with the big boys on the field, they'll have to do the same on the recruiting trail. NU certainly seems to be headed in that direction, especially in Ohio, where it has landed big commitments from Igwebuike and four-star recruit Ifeadi Odenigbo in the past two years.

Moving up the Rankings

Scout released its new recruiting rankings, and after a solid finish at No. 48 in 2012, Northwestern is moving up in 2012. The Wildcats come in at No. 26 nationally in the current rankings and No. 4 in the Big Ten.

Of NU's 17 commitments, one is a 4-star, 14 are 3-stars and two are 2-stars. While there is still a long time until the rankings are finalized, the shift in the recruiting season to earlier in the year means schools won't add much more to their classes. That means NU has a decent shot at finishing in the top 30 nationally, and with a couple more solid commitments, the Cats could sneak into the top 25.

In Case You Missed It
