Northwestern football got an unexpected commitment today from linebacker Hamilton Anoa'i. Now, NU basketball has joined in the fun with the commitment of Johnnie Vassar.
Vassar, who plays at Jserra Catholic in San Juan Capistrano, California, is a three-star point guard who had offers from DePaul, Illinois, SMU, UTEP and USC. He has bounced around a lot — he's a native of Chicago but has played at La Lumiere School in Indiana, Lawrence Academy in Massachusetts (NU assistant Armon Gates played for nearby Brewster), Alpharetta Milton in Georgia and now Jserra Catholic in California.
And here are his highlights. When the title contains "RIDICULOUS," that's generally a good thing:
Vassar is the fifth commitment in NU's class of 2014. Barring an unforeseen transfer, he will also be the Wildcats' last recruit in that class, as he brings NU to the scholarship limit of 13. It also means that, as expected, Michael Turner, who left the team this summer, will not be returning.
It will be interesting to see how the future sets up for point guard at NU. Dave Sobolewski has one more year of eligibility, but Bryant McIntosh was seen as the Wildcats' point guard of the future. Now, he'll have some competition. Vassar joins McIntosh, Vic Law, Scottie Lindsey and Gavin Skelly in NU's 2014 recruiting class. We'll have more information when it becomes available.
