Northwestern Recruiting Update: February 24

by Kevin Trahan (@k_trahan)

Spring football is set to start up on Wednesday, so that officially begins the start of football season. From now through next season, we'll have football coverage on InsideNU, including weekly recruiting updates like these. We're just a few days out from National Signing Day, but NU is already hard at work on its 2014 class, with one commitment down and many more to come before the start of the season. Here's what you need to know from this week.

- Northwestern fans are already excited about 2013 recruit and "quarterback of the future" Matt Alviti, but the Wildcats are looking strong to add another quarterback in this year's class. At this point, it's a three-man race — Chris Durkin, Clayton Thorson and Deshone Kizer. According to Scout, Durkin has NU at the top of his list, which includes Michigan State and Illinois. Then there's this about Thorson:

It'll be interesting to see what happens with the quarterback situation in Evanston, as Durkin and Thorson appear to be getting serious about it.

- NU seems to be making quite the impression on Derek Kief, who says his top three are NU, Ohio State and Kentucky. That's a group you don't see together too often.

- Kevin Willis currently only has an offer from Indiana, but he told ESPN's Jared Shanker that NU is very close to offering. Among others he said he's gotten interest from — Iowa and LSU.

- J.B. Butler sees Northwestern as the perfect fit.
