Notes from Pat Fitzgerald's press conference this week:
- Fitz said: "For the most part he played really well but Anthony Walker had 10 mental errors and can do a lot better." Walker lost a lot of weight over the summer. At one point he was so heavy Fitz was thinking about playing him at DE. "Walker hits like Barry Gardner," Fitz said. Walker won't take Collin Ellis' spot but he earned more playing time.
-Fitz thought Siemian made a handful of explosive throws. Aside from three overthrows, "he played one of his better games."
-Fitz thought Harris and VanHoose played the best games of their careers collectively (before the Harris injury)
-Fitz said they should have won 59-6 if it weren't for special teams mistakes.
-"Our kicker was terrible and our holder was unfocused," Fitz said. "We'll have competition at kicker but Mitchell is the starter as of today."
- The Cats had their first penalty in punt return in two years until Saturday, according to Fitz.
-"Punt game was horrendous. Coverage lanes were terrible. We gave up another explosive punt return. We have a lot of room to improve there."
-"We are very very immature and it continues to show up in little details. That might not change. It's an underclassmen issue, not a senior issue." Fitz said this immaturity occurs off the field. One example: showing up late to things and missing breakfast.
-Fitz on Wisconsin QB Tanner McEvoy: "Tanner is very athletic. He played safety against us last year. He doesn't take many chances throwing into coverage. I see a dynamic playmaker. He makes pretty good decisions throwing it."
-Ibraheim Campbell won't play this week. Collin Ellis is still day-to-day with a concussion. Mathew Harris is OK and could be ready for Saturday, miraculously.
-Badgers running back Mevin Gordon reminds Fitz of Walter Payton. But Gordon isn't the only runner on Wisconsin who scares Fitz. Corey Clement and Mcevoy are also threats on the ground.
-"Ifeadi Odenigbo needs to get better in the run game." Fitz said Odenigbo might not play as much next week because Wisconsin is really good on the ground.
