EVANSTON -- Northwestern center Joey van Zegeren missed Northwestern's 77-35 win over Chicago State on Sunday night with a foot injury. The senior, head coach Chris Collins said, is expected to miss "a couple weeks" with a "stress-related" injury.
While not going into very many specifics, Collins said van Zegeren's foot is not broken. "That's going to be a loss for us," Collins said after the game.
Collins said he is hopeful that van Zegeren will return in time for Big Ten play, which begins on Dec. 30.
Van Zegeren had been playing a major role off the bench as Northwestern second true "big." The graduate transfer from Virginia Tech had been averaging 4.1 points, 4.0 points and 1.4 blocks in 13.6 minutes per game off the bench. Collins said sophomore forward Gavin Skelly will see more minutes playing as an under-sized center until van Zegeren returns.
Northwestern, now 8-1, plays Mississippi Valley State, DePaul, Sacred Heart and Loyola (Maryland) before opening Big Ten play at Nebraska on Dec. 30.
