Northwestern student starts petition to end "Put Your Hands Up In The Air"

Sam Cohen, a junior at Northwestern, created a petition directed at athletic director Jim Phillips to try to get the athletic department to put an end to the tradition of playing "Put Your Hands Up In The Air" between the third and fourth quarters of football games. Cohen called the tradition "contrived," and argued that it "makes our fan presence seem weaker."

This is a topic our Ben Goren has addressed before with a somewhat humorous, but also somewhat serious column on why the "tradition" must go.

Now a student is trying to effect some change. We'll see how much traction this gains.
