Class of 2017 punter Cody Gronewold commits to Northwestern

The preferred walk-on is from UNL’s backyard.

Class-of-2017 punter Cody Gronewold has committed to Northwestern as a preferred walk-on, he announced on Twitter following Northwestern’s 21-7 loss to Wisconsin.

Gronewold is ranked as the 35th-best punter in his class by Kohl’s Kicking Camps. Here’s what Kohl’s has to say about the 6-foot-3, 172-pounder from Lincoln Northeast High School in Lincoln, Nebraska:

“Gronewald’s most recent Kohl’s Camp was the NSC in July of 2016. He has attended many Kohl's camps and has shown great improvement over the years. He has a great ability to call on his "A" ball when he needs to. Continued hard work will see him do successful things as a specialist.”

Northwestern now has both a kicker and a punter in the class. Charlie Kuhbander committed back in June. Of course, as a preferred walk-on, Gronewold will not count against the scholarship limit (though he will count against the 105-player roster limit).

Here are some of his highlights:
