Northwestern senior wide receiver Austin Carr was named second-team All-American by Sports Illustrated. For Carr, the Big Ten’s leading receiver in all major categories, it is just one of many individual honors.
Carr is also a finalist for the Biletnikoff Award and was named first-team All-Big Ten alongside Northwestern running back Justin Jackson. He also earned the Richter-Howard Award as the Big Ten’s top receiver.
Carr’s 2016 campaign has been one of the best in Northwestern history. He has 84 catches for 1196 yards, and his 12 touchdowns are tied for most in a single season with D’Wayne Bates. The former walk-on scored a touchdown in six straight games this year, including three scores against Iowa, and has been remarkably consistent, even against some of the best competition any wide receiver will face all year. He recorded 8 receptions for 158 yards against Ohio State and 12 receptions for 132 yards and 1 touchdown versus Wisconsin.
Carr is joined on SI’s second team by East Carolina’s Zay Jones, also a finalist for the Biletnikoff. Oklahoma’s Dede Westbrook, the third Biletnikoff finalist, and Western Michigan’s Corey Davis are the first-team wide receivers.
This is the second straight year Sports Illustrated has named a Northwestern player as an All-American: Linebacker Anthony Walker Jr. was a second-teamer last season.
