Northwestern football recruiting: Complete list of targets and scholarship offers, April 29 update

Jerry Lai-USA TODAY Sports

It's been a little over two weeks since we published our first complete list of high schoolers in the class of 2017 holding a Northwestern offer, and since then, a lot has changed. The Wildcats have added linebacker Peter McIntyre and quarterback Andrew Marty, but missed out on both of their running back targets.

Without further ado, we look at who has an offer on the table from Pat Fitzgerald, and who are the most likely candidates to take that offer and head to Evanston after graduating next year.

(NOTE: All star ratings are from 247 Sports. Offer lists are based on data from 247 Sports, Rivals and ESPN. If one or two of the three sites lists a player as holding an offer from Northwestern, but the other(s) doesn't, the player was included on the list.)

The Wildcats managed to flip Marty from Miami (Ohio) to Northwestern, so NU has its quarterback for the class. Jack Sears's ever-increasing stock and offer list (he picked up UCLA and Texas A&M offers recently) probably made Pat Fitzgerald and co. realize that getting him to Evanston would be tough.

Running Back

None.

With Eno Benjamin having committed to Iowa, Lamont Atkins was Northwestern's lone uncommitted 2017 running back prospect. That is, until this weekend, when he chose Virginia over NU and Boston College. Expect Northwestern to extend some more offers to running backs, although the Wildcats have a deep, talented stable of ball carriers at the moment.

Northwestern has been quite active at the wide receiver spot, with nine offers currently out to uncommitted prospects. This includes three new additions, Saiid Adebo, Jeremy Singleton and Berkeley Holman. Adebo and Holman have offers, according to Rivals, but according to 247 do not.

At this point, Northwestern is hoping to grab at least a couple of the guys on this list, as evidenced by the three new offers. The top four guys are stretches given their offer list, but Sullivan-Brown had NU in his "Top 10" list. Given how the wide receivers have struggled, Fitzgerald is clearly scouring the market at this position. 247 does not list Holman as having an offer, but both Rivals and ESPN do.

No changes here for Northwestern since we last checked in. Jaggers remains a reach for the Wildcats, who already have a good superback commit in Trey Pugh. It is possible that Fitzgerald could try to add a second superback considering both Jayme Taylor and Garrett Dickerson will be out of eligibility in two years, but the position certainly isn't a pressing need like wide receiver is.

A clear area of need in 2017, tackle is one position at which Northwestern can't afford to miss out on its top targets. Wiederkehr, who is high on NU according to 247, could be close. Additionally, NU recently offered Sichterman, who had a very good last week or so. In addition to Northwestern, the Ohio native picked up offers from Michigan State, Ohio and Bowling Green.

Also debuting on this list is Austin Deculus (listed as having an offer according to ESPN), who has offers from basically every major football school in the country. Target Shane Clenin has committed to Arkansas.

The only offensive guard from our first installment, Michael Miranda, committed to Penn State on April 21, leaving Farrar as the only target currently with an offer. Farrar had been committed to UCLA, but reopened his recruitment on April 11. He has a very strong offer list, though, and NU would have to beat out several SEC and Big Ten schools, among others.

This position certainly isn't one of need, though, with Slater having already committed and a solid amount of youth on the roster at interior lineman positions. Tackle remains the pressing need on the offensive line.

Center (one commit: Sam Gerak)

None.

Gerak is Northwestern's guy at center; another offer at the position doesn't seem too likely.

As Martin Oppegaard wrote a few weeks ago, Brown and Kent were very important commitments that also represented a major step forward for Northwestern on the recruiting trail. Couple that with the early commitment of Sam Miller (whose brother Alex is in the Class of 2016), and Northwestern has an impressive group up front already. Adding a fourth, and even a fifth lineman isn't out of the question —€” Fitzgerald loves to stockpile in the trenches — but this position certainly isn't in dire need of another top commitment. NU has extended an offer to Odeyigbo since the last update, according to Rivals.

With Gallagher in tow, an offer to Theobald, which came on April 20, was somewhat surprising. Nevertheless, linebacker is a fluid position, especially at Northwestern. Linebacker coach Randy Bates and the NU staff will often take€” guys who played inside and move them outside, or vice versa.

Marchiol is playing his senior year at IMG Academy, much like 2016 commit Jango Glackin. He has a list of impressive offers, but so did Glackin, who could be a helpful piece in swinging Marchiol toward Evanston. Clarke has an NU offer according to ESPN, but not according to 247 or Rivals, and he already holds a bevy of SEC offers. The addition of McIntyre was an important one, as three linebacker commits per class is a solid number, and something Fitzgerald usually achieves.

This is an interesting spot for Northwestern. The Wildcats will start a senior (Matthew Harris) and a junior (Keith Watkins) this year, with Montre Hartage, Alonzo Mayo and Trae Williams (all Class of 2015 recruits) manning the inside positions and backing up the upperclassmen. With Parrker Westphal's move to safety, there are no class of 2014 cornerbacks on the roster. Northwestern has highly-touted Roderick Campbell coming in the 2016 class, along with Brian Bullock, so at least two cornerbacks in 2017 would seem optimal.

The Wildcats currently have offers out to six uncommitted class of 2017 corners, but none of them have Northwestern especially high on their lists, according to 247. With Ruiz on board, Northwestern will likely look to wrap up a second commit. There has been some movement on the list since the last update: Cheyenne Labruzza committed to Tennessee and D.J. Brown committed to Penn State.

With Hiller and Jackson already on board, Northwestern might be set at safety, but don't count out any of the guys on this list yet; Northwestern could still add a third safety —€” the Wildcats only had one in 2016, so there's certainly room —€” or be looking at these players as potential cornerbacks or even linebackers at the college level. Nelson is "warm," according to 247, but Northwestern will have to beat out in-state Michigan and Michigan State to get him. The only change from the last update is that Kyle Nunn has committed to Pitt.
