Northwestern University has announced a new “clear bag” policy for Ryan Field for 2016 as presumptively going forward. The new rules go into effect immediately, starting with the season opener against Western Michigan on September 3 at 11 a.m. CT.

Here are the two main things that stand out:
- A limit on the size of the bag, even if it is clear (12 inches x 6 inches x 12 inches)
- Only very small non-clear bags—think small purse size (4.5 inches x 6.5 inches)
Additionally, binoculars are permitted, but binocular cases are not. Same for cameras: no camera cases. No backpacks of any type are permitted, either.
Similar measures are being taken by schools all over the country, including at UCLA and at Mississippi State.
The program noted that exceptions will be made for “medically necessary items.”
