Northwestern fans should be tuning into the WNBA Draft tonight, as star forward Nia Coffey is projected to go in the first round. It will be a historic day for Northwestern women’s basketball, as Northwestern hasn’t had a player taken in the WNBA Draft since Amy Jaeschke in 2011. Today, Northwestern could have two.
The draft will start on ESPN2 at 6 p.m. CST and the second and third rounds will be moved to ESPNU.
The surefire pick is obviously Coffey, who averaged 17.9 points, 9.2 rebounds and 1.7 per during her four years at Northwestern and has drawn the praise of many prognosticators. ESPN analyst LaChina Robinson said Coffey has “tremendous upside” and expects her to adapt well to the speed of the WNBA.
Coffey could quite possibly stay in Chicago, as the Chicago Sky have two picks in the first round and have been linked to Coffey at No. 9.
“I haven’t talked to Chicago; I’ve heard they’re interested,” Coffey said. “It would be amazing to stay in Chicago, I love Chicago a lot, but making any team would just be a dream come true for me.”
In addition, Northwestern point guard and two-time Big Ten Defensive Player of the year Ashley Deary has been mentioned on some draft boards as a second or third-rounder. Deary, a 5-foot-4 ballhandler who was a menace on the defensive end, will be hoping to get selected or at least make a WNBA camp in the summer.
Deary will not be attending the draft itself, but Coffey has been invited to New York City to participate in the festivities and walk on stage when her name is called. It should be a great night for the players, Northwestern Athletics and for fans of Northwestern women’s basketball.
