Newsome’s 247 composite ranks as the No. 8 player in the state of Illinois and No. 44 cornerback in the nation. He attended the same high school, Glenbard North, as All-Big Ten running back Justin Jackson.
Pat Fitzgerald and his staff have dominated the state in recruiting for the class of 2018. Newsome is Northwestern’s sixth in-state commitment, choosing to play in Evanston over offers from Arkansas, Boston College, Duke, Illinois, Iowa, Iowa State, Minnesota, Purdue, Syracuse, Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech, Virginia, and Western Michigan, among others. Northwestern now has six of the top 20 players in Illinois, per 247.
It’s been a big recruiting weekend for Northwestern after three-star defensive end Andrew Leota committed on Friday and three-star wide receiver Jacob Jefferson committed on Saturday. Newsome joins Leota and the No. 1 player in Illinois Devin O’Rourke as the defensive commits thus far. He ranks as the fourth-best player in the ten-player class, which is now up to third in the Big Ten and No. 9 nationally, per 247.
Newsome’s highlight reel reveals an extremely athletic, ball-hawking corner with the strength and physicality to make plays in the backfield.
Newsome was named the defensive back MVP of this weekend’s The Opening Nike camp in Chicago.
