Background

Heard committed to Northwestern way back in March, making him the 4th member of Pat Fitzgerald’s 2019 class. He did a little bit of everything in high school as he played running back, cornerback, safety, returned kicks and even threw the ball out of the Wildcat formation. What he lacks in size, he makes up for in speed as he runs an impressive 4.26 shuttle, per his Hudl profile. Heard was also a track standout as he won a state championship in the 4X100 meter relay. He may not be the biggest, but he is still physical. He is good at keeping his outside shoulder free when getting blocked in order to string out run plays.

Outlook

There is a gaping hole in the secondary with the departure of cornerback Montre Hartage. Heard can provide depth to a secondary that was mediocre last year. Heard will need to earn whatever minutes he gets as Trae Williams, Alonzo Mayo, Cameron Ruiz, and Greg Newsome II are all returning. Despite all those returning, Heard’s speed and physicality will give him the opportunity to see the field early next year.
