Background
Washington told The Clemson Insider that he was high on Tennessee in a July article, so it seems as though Pat Fitzgerald and his staff came from behind to land him. The Wildcats got a steal in Washington, as Alabama, Ohio State, and Stanford showed interest. None of these programs wound up offering, but Washington had other Power 5 offers from Auburn and aforementioned Tennessee, among others. Washington is an extremely versatile player as he played cornerback, safety, slot receiver and some quarterback for his high school team. According to Washington’s Hudl tape, he logged nearly 1,500 all-purpose yards in 2018 with 14 touchdowns. He may be small, but he’s fast and hard to tackle. He is also solid in coverage with good ball skills, making him somewhat of a Swiss Army Knife.
Outlook
Washington doesn’t fit into any one category in terms of his position. He is a football player. With that being said, he has the opportunity to play on either side of the ball, and I could also see him returning kicks. The secondary is deep, but he could challenge for snaps as his ball skills allow him to get a lot of interceptions. There may be more opportunity for him on offense as the receiving core will need to replace the production of Flynn Nagel. Those are big shoes to fill, though, so don’t expect Washington to do that right away. Nonetheless, Washington’s versatility should allow him to make an impact somewhere.
