Unfortunately, there isn’t much of an update on the quarterback competition at Northwestern. None of the three quarterbacks competing — TJ Green, Aidan Smith or Andrew Marty — have separated themselves from the rest, according to quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator Mick McCall. He said the position is fluid at the moment.
Given how inexperienced Green, Smith and Marty are, it will probably take until Kenosha in the summer for a clearer depth chart to emerge.
The wild card in all of this is Clayton Thorson’s health. Thorson was in pads and throwing Saturday, but didn’t participate in any drills. He’ll be back at some point this season, but the coaches don’t know — or, more likely, won’t say — when he’s expected back.
We were told the current competition is so close that, if the team had to release a depth chart today, there would be multiple players listed at first-string. We’ll let you know who runs with the 1s next week when the team does more scrimmage-like work at its open practice.
