Northwestern secured the commitment of one of the best 2019 in-state players as three-star linebacker Michael Jansey committed to the Wildcats Saturday afternoon. The Batavia. Ill. native is ranked as the No. 9 recruit in the state of Illinois. With New Trier defensive lineman Duke Olges committing last month, the Wildcats have pledges from two of the top ten 2019 Illinois recruits.
Jansey unofficially visited Northwestern back in March, but didn’t pick up an offer from Pat Fitzgerald and his staff until May 31. He visited Purdue the next day, but ultimately decided to stay in state. Jansey was also strongly considering Missouri, Iowa State, and West Virginia.
With Jansey’s commitment, Northwestern now has 13 commits for the class of 2019. Its 2019 class has moved up to 23rd nationally, and sixth in the Big Ten. With the class about 60 percent full, it’s looking like Fitzgerald is putting together one of his best recruiting classes during his time at Northwestern. In 2014, Fitzgerald’s 15-man class ranked 47th nationally and eighth in the Big Ten. That class also had a strong Illinois focus-- Clayton Thorson, Justin Jackson, and Parrker Westphal were all top ten players in the state.
Jansey racked up some monster stats for Batavia High School, who earned a Class 7A state title in 2017. As a junior, Jansey amassed 99 tackles, 27.5 tackles for loss, and 16 sacks. Check out his highlights here:
