Northwestern faces another stiff road challenge when it takes on No. 21 Maryland tonight in College Park. The Terps (16-5, 7-3 B1G) sit at fourth in the Big Ten standings, but are coming off a brutal “home” loss to Illinois at Madison Square Garden. Maryland led by as many as 11 in the first half before Illinois came storming back amid a flurry of three-pointers.
Still, this is an excellent Terps team. Big men Jalen Smith (11.8 ppg, 6.9 rpg) and Bruno Fernando (14.6 ppg on 67 percent shooting, 10.3 rpg) kill opponents on the offensive boards. Diminutive guard Anthony Cowan Jr. (17.4 ppg, 4.6 apg) is enjoying another solid season and freshman Aaron Wiggins (43-of-101 from deep) has developed into one of the biggest long-range threats in the conference. If there’s one place NU can exploit Maryland, it’s in the turnover game — in conference play, the Terps have turned the ball over at the highest rate in the Big Ten.
