According to Mitchell Byars of the Boulder Daily Camera, Fairview High School quarterback Aidan Atkinson, a Northwestern commit, has been arrested in Boulder, Colorado and is facing serious sexual assault charges.
Atkinson, who is currently 18 years old, was a minor when the alleged assaults took place. Police allege, according to the Daily Camera, that he sexually assaulted multiple women on a party bus in 2018. The “serious nature of the allegations” and the fact that the defendant is now an adult led the Daily Camera and the Denver Post to publish his name.
He is reportedly facing three charges of sexual assault, one charge of attempted sexual assault, and five charges of unlawful sexual contact.
The quarterback verbally committed to Northwestern back in November of 2018, and reaffirmed his commitment in a mid-season interview less than a month ago with Louie Vaccher of WildcatReport.
Fairview has a state playoff game scheduled for tonight. They have now confirmed that Atkinson will not be playing and that they are fully participating with the authorities.
Because he has not yet signed with Northwestern, it is our understanding that the team, the school, and Pat Fitzgerald cannot comment on the specifics of the situation. We will update this story if and when we learn more.
UPDATE(S): The program declined a general request for comment on their policy in situations (like this one) in which committed recruits are charged with crimes.
According to the Fairview High School newspaper, Atkinson will not be returning to school, but it’s unclear if that is permanent or temporary.
ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg has also reported that he will remain in jail until he appears in court on Monday.
