Northwestern (16-13, 9-9 B1G) will take on Michigan State (19-10, 9-9) in the second round of Big Ten Tournament play this morning at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
The eighth-seeded Wildcats took down the ninth-seeded Spartans in their lone meeting this year. But Michigan State is a virtual NCAA Tournament lock thanks to their impressive wins, and will be a tough obstacle for Northwestern to overcome. The winner of the matchup will advance to Friday and play top-seeded Maryland.
The Spartans are led by guard Shay Colley, who scored 28 last time out against Northwestern. Taryn McCutcheon, Nia Clouden, and Jenna Allen all average double digit points as well.
For Northwestern, Pallas Kunaiyi-Akpanah will be participating in her final Big Ten Tournament. The senior forward, who is averaging a double-double, put up 17 points, 10 rebounds, and three blocks in the regular season game against Michigan State.
Lindsey Pulliam is the leading scorer for the Wildcats, who almost certainly need to win the Big Ten Tournament to reach the NCAA Tournament. If they can’t survive probably the toughest possible road through the Big Ten, they will likely head to the WNIT.
