Not the Christmas present the Wildcats wanted.

After going the entire regular season without a single case of COVID-19, Northwestern football recorded its first confirmed positive test.

People within the program received a text saying an unnamed student-athlete tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday, according to a source. This is the first known confirmed case within the Wildcat program. A player recorded a false positive test during training camp in early August.

A program spokesperson had nothing to add to our reporting but said the team hasn’t changed any preparation for the Citrus Bowl.

The team still plans to practice on Saturday and will conduct antigen testing before practice to ensure everyone in the facility has tested negative. The team administered testing this morning as well. It had tested every day after practice until this point.

Northwestern is set to play Auburn in the Citrus Bowl on New Year’s Day.
