Lacrosse: Perfect season continues after beating Michigan 19-10

Scane scored six to push the ‘Cats to 11-0.

Northwestern Athletics

The dominance continued for No. 2 Northwestern Women’s Lacrosse on Senior Day, as they defeated Michigan 19-10 to finish the regular season undefeated at 11-0.

The ‘Cats led Michigan throughout the entire game, never really letting the Wolverines get close as Northwestern outshot them a whopping 47-21. As has been a common theme this season, junior and five (!) time 2021 B1G Offensive Player of the Week Izzy Scane tallied six goals, bringing her goal total in this abbreviated season to an absurd 70. Meanwhile, senior Lauren Gilbert added three of her own.

On the defensive end, senior Brennan Dwyer had five draw controls while junior goalkeeper Madison Doucette had seven saves to stymie the Wolverines.

Unlike their previous win over Ohio State, the Wildcats got off to a quick start against the Wolverines. The ‘Cats scored the first five goals of the game and never let Michigan get within five goals throughout. Northwestern was able to fully put the game away on a 6-2 run in the second half, putting them up 19-9. Michigan then scored one final goal in garbage time.

For reference, the last time Northwestern posted a perfect regular season was back in 2009, when they went on to win the NCAA Championship as part of their span in which they won seven NCAA Championships in eight years. A title is certainly in sights for the ‘Cats, as they move into the postseason after a perfect regular season that saw them play 11 conference opponents.

The Big Ten Tournament will commence on April 29 at Penn State. The ‘Cats have earned a first-round bye due to winning the regular season championship, and will wait to see who they face. After the Big Ten tournament, they’ll likely face their first non-conference opponent of the season in the NCAA Tournament.
