Softball Open Thread, Week Ending Sunday, April 17

This weekend, Northwestern plays Purdue in a three-game series at Sharon J. Drysdale Field. Friday's game will begin at 4:00 p.m. CT, with Saturday's games beginning at 1 p.m. and Sunday's finale beginning at noon. B1G+ will broadcast all three games live.

Northwestern (27-6, 8-1 Big Ten) is coming off a weekend sweep of Ohio State, winning all three games 28-12. The Cats'.818 winning % leads the Big Ten, and their eight conference victories are tied for the most in the conference with Nebraska.

After a fantastic series against Ohio State, Jordyn Rudd was voted Big Ten Player of the Week. Rudd had a 0.857 batting average (6-for-7) in three games in Columbus, with a 0.923 on-base percentage (12-of-13) and a 2.286 slugging percentage, hitting three home missiles and recording only one out. In the series, the catcher also had six runs, six RBI, and six walks.

Skyler Shellmyer smashed her first career home run over the right field fence on Friday, finishing the weekend with a .583 (7-for-12) average and six runs scored.

Over .340 batting averages are held by Rudd (.365), Nikki Cuchran (.363), Shellmyer (.358), and Rachel Lewis (.343). They're on pace to become the first Wildcats since 2015 to hit over.320 in the same season.

Purdue is 19-21 overall and 2-6 in Big Ten play, having lost six of their previous seven games. Purdue is 47-20 all-time versus the Wildcats, including five victories in the last seven meetings.
