Lacrosse Open Thread, Week Ending Sunday, April 17

At noon this Saturday, April 16, the No. 3 Northwestern lacrosse team will face No. 25 Johns Hopkins in the regular season home finale at Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium. The game will be broadcast on B1G+, and NU will honor its ten seniors following the game.

The Wildcats beat San Diego State 20-8 last Sunday to extend their victory streak to a season-high eight games. NU had 11 different scorers, with Lauren Gilbert and Jill Girardi scoring four goals each to lead the squad. Northwestern also had 20 draws compared to the Aztecs' nine.

Northwestern (12-2, 4-0 Big Ten) leads the Big Ten Conference standings with a perfect 4-0 record. With a win over Johns Hopkins (8-6, 0-3 Big Ten) and if Ohio State beats Maryland on Sunday (unlikely to be honest), the Wildcats can capture at least a share of the regular season crown this weekend. For the first time in program history, NU is attempting to win back-to-back Big Ten regular season championships.

This week, three NU student-athletes received Big Ten awards.

Lauren Gilbert received Offensive Player of the Week honors, while Jill Girardi was awarded Midfielder of the Week and Samantha White was selected Freshman of the Week.

Gilbert was also selected National Player of the Week by the IWCLA.

In terms of draw controls per game, NU leads the Big Ten and ranks third nationally (18.5). The Cats are ranked fifth in the country and first in the Big Ten in scoring offense (16.71).

Girardi leads the Big Ten in draw controls per game and is second in the country (10.58).

Gilbert leads the Big Ten with 56 goals and is ranked sixth nationally. She is second in the Big Ten and sixth nationally in scoring with 5.64 points per game.

vs. Johns Hopkins Series History
Northwestern has won eight of the last nine matches against Johns Hopkins and is 17-4 all-time versus them. The Wildcats defeated the Blue Jays in Baltimore twice last season, winning 17-8 and 18-9. The last time JHU visited Evanston was in 2017, when the 'Cats won 10-9 in overtime.

Next Week
The Wildcats play Maryland in their regular-season finale at College Park. The game will be broadcast on Big Ten Network at 10:30 a.m. CT on Saturday, April 23.
