Northwestern players are racking in the weekly Big Ten honors this week after their win over Stanford. Anthony Walker was named defensive player of the week and Clayton Thorson has been named freshman of the week.
Starting in the first game he's played, Thorson made some key third down throws and had this outstanding run for the game's only touchdown.
This isn't really a surprise after such a stellar performance, but Northwestern linebacker Anthony Walker is the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week after finishing with 10 tackles and three tackles-for-loss against Stanford.
Walker showed his potential early last year against Penn State, and he's only getting better. Don't be surprised if he gets this honor again, and if he's a contender or All-Big Ten teams at the end of the season.
Per NU Sports, Blackhawks chairman and Northwestern alumnus Rocky Wirtz , president & CEO John McDonough and executive vice president Jay Blunk will serve as honorary captains for the game.
The GIF is FIRE. The jerseys though? Eh.
The former Northwestern linebacker/safety didn't survive the first round of Raiders camp, as first reported by Steve Corkran of RaiderBeat.com. He was playing at safety for Oakland but couldn't overcome his "tweener" status
The Minnesota Vikings announced that they have released former Northwestern quarterback Mike Kafka in order to get down to the 75-player roster limit. Taylor Heinicke, an undrafted rookie out of Old Dominion, appears to have beaten out Kafka for the third-string job behind Teddy Bridgewater and Shaun Hill. Kafka had a strong start to the preseason, but increasingly lost out on reps to Heinicke as the preseason progressed.
The Redskins tweeted out their first round of cuts Monday afternoon, and former Northwestern wideout Tony Jones was one of them. Jones was always a longshot to make the team considering the Redskins are relatively deep at the position. It was not specified what injury Jones had sustained.
Per Josh Wilson of Stampede Blue, the SB Nation website of the Colts, Brandon Vitabile has been cut:
The Colts had Khaled Holmes and Jonotthan Harrison ahead of the four-year Wildcat starter, who will now hope to be claimed by another team or perhaps added to the Indianapolis practice squad.
Pat Fitzgerald named Christian Jones, Dan Vitale, Deonte Gibson and Traveon Henry as captains Friday night during Northwestern's football Meet the Team night. All four of Northwestern's captains are seniors, with two being on offense and two on defense. Redshirt freshman Clayton Thorson, Northwestern's starting quarterback as of Thursday, was not named a captain.
