Northwestern gets back from a ten day break, and, uh, um, uh, ummm, well, I know none of us really want to think about basketball but we have to okay okay okay so let's do it.
Are they good?: Wins against Fordham, "Texas Tyler", UC Riverside, and Texas-Pan American, losses to the rest, so, now. WE ARE IN THE PRESENCE OF A KENPOM NO. 1, Joel Wright, who uses a nation-high 38.9 percent of his team's possessions in his 21 minutes of court time, so I'm excited to see him chuck. He's a New Yorker - STAND UP NEW YORK - who went to Duquesne before a stint at Blinn, aka the junior college of Cam Newton and Chris "Birdman" Andersen. He doesn't lead the team in scoring, but still, I can't remember the last time Northwestern played someone ranked No. 1 in Kenpom ANYTHING - and that's with 347 teams, each of which tends to have about 8-10 players who qualify to be ranked - and possession usage is just about the funniest thing to be ranked in, so I'm interested to watch him.
Kenpom's updated Texas power rankings: Texas (50), Texas A&M (100), Texas Arlington (117), North Texas (161), Texas El Paso (172), Texas Tech (225), Texas Christian (227), Texas San Antonio (238), Texas State (252), Texas Southern (254), Texas A&M Corpus Christi (305), Texas Pan American (328),
BUT ON THE REAL DREW CRAWFORD ISN'T PLAYING TONIGHT: So those ten first games were kind of pointless, since this team is going to be drastically different. Minutes will go up for Kale Abrahamson, who I expect starts, as well as Alex Marcotullio, Tre Demps, and Sanjay Lumpkin, who hasn't really gotten any significant minutes. It'll be weeeeeeeeird. Luckily, I don't expect a lot out of Texas State, so this should provide a good opportunity for them to try out some rotations.
Difference between the amount of times Northwestern has been to the NCAA Tournament and Texas State has: Two, most recently in 1997.
What should we know about Texas State?: LBJ went there, George Strait went there, which is why I also just today realized that "All My Exes Live In Texas" was just a more geographically-centered version of "Area Codes" by Ludacris. Texas State is the school where Eric Taylor briefly accepted a job on Friday Night Lights before SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER, and where Smash Williams SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER but then basically just watch the show. I also read this story today about the founders of TFM that mentions that both the site's founders went to Texas State.
Names: I really like Basil Brown II, but hope he names his kid
Basil Brown too Basil Brown as well so that he can be BB3.
Should NU win?: I think so. Hopefully we can keep the good karma from three wins of games in Texas and two against teams with the word "Texas" in their name already on the season rolling and win despite the lack of Crawford. Stanford later in the week is a real test, so it would be nice to figure out the best options without Crawford rather than testing them out against a tough opponent.
