As the Wildcats gear up for the season, the marquee names coming to Ryan Field this fall have provided some excitement.

If you’ve been following Northwestern football’s official twitter account this offseason, there’s a decent chance you’ve already memorized the 2018 home lineup.

Those are just two examples of the near-constant hype the Wildcats have been dishing out on social media regarding their demanding slate. Though it is nearly impossible to back up their claim, the overall upcoming Northwestern schedule has been ranked No. 4 in the Big Ten in difficulty by both Tom Fornelli of CBS Sports and Matt Smith of 247 Sports and Southern Pigskin, with the latter also placing the Wildcats at 8th in the country. With the home schedule providing the meat of the difficulty and big names, it’s safe to say that it at least propelled those rankings.

Playing in the typically-thin West division, the Wildcats have been accused of playing a noticeably weak schedule in past successful seasons. For Montre Hartage, this year’s slate is a chance to potentially turn some heads: “It’s a great opportunity to show people that we are contenders,” he said. “We are who we are because of what we do every week.”

That chip on the shoulder mentality has always been part of the Wildcats under Pat Fitzgerald. This year, with all of the big names coming to Ryan Field, Northwestern may have a chance to successfully flip that narrative.

Clayton Thorson looked at the schedule similarly. “It’s huge. To play all these teams at home is big for us. We know their fans are going to travel well so it’s going to be a challenge but it’ll be fun.”

Indeed, the Wildcats will face four of the highest-drawing teams in the country in consecutive home games (with Michigan, Nebraska, Wisconsin, and Notre Dame lined up in the meat of that schedule), so their home-field advantage might not exactly be there. But, those games are still not road games, which is important. Even if Wisconsin fans occupy nearly half of Ryan Field, that’s still better than playing at Camp Randall with 80,000 red-clad fans screaming when you have the ball.

But with 11 Power 5 teams on the schedule (Notre Dame is typically included in that designation), a surprise 10 win season from the Wildcats this year would leave them on the edge of the playoff conversation rather than squarely on the outside looking in. That change, mainly due to the difficult home schedule, has Northwestern and their players salivating.

Players raved about the building’s design and amenities.

Since the opening of the new Ryan Fieldhouse, athletes and fans alike have marveled at the picture-perfect landscape. The impeccable lake and skyline views makes looking out of the 44-foot-tall windows beyond the east end zone astounding.

But what the structure actually contains has been overlooked by its location — and its substance may be just as impressive as its appearances.

Although the building totals an immense 96,135 square feet, senior cornerback Montre Hartage praised the ease the facility has created in helping the athletes get from one point of training to another. “The convenience and the accessibility to get from the meeting rooms to the weight rooms, just little things like that are so impactful” Hartage said.

Potential future Wildcats have taken notice.

“Recruits want to see that the University has made an investment to them, facilities is one of those areas,” coach Pat Fitzgerald said. “It’s become a check of the box; you either have them or you don’t.”

Aside from the clear benefits from a recruiting standpoint, the state-of-the-art accommodations have an immediate benefit as well.

“There’s guys we can get to campus that we wouldn’t have been able to before, but recruiting is one thing, more importantly [it’s about] the day-to-day for our guys.” Fitz said. “That’s what we centered this whole thing around, everything was about the players.”

Additions such as the 87-foot dome — configured with the consideration of punting and kicking trajectories in mind — may seem insignificant. But that, as well as the facility’s other meticulous components, shows that it was constructed with the “difference is in the details” mindset.

The weight room and field facilities are certainly impressive, but the vast expanse of lounge spaces, academic services and team meetings rooms all directly on campus — rather than the previous mile away — make a lesser-known but just as substantial impact.

“The new facility is definitely a game changer,” senior Nate Hall said. “To walk into a facility like that and know that you have every resource available to you is incredible.”

The linebacker has been recovering from a knee injury which occurred at the end of last season and has taken notice of the assets the new facility provides. “It gives you that comfort to know that you have nothing to worry about in terms of resources and equipment to one, get healthy and two, practice to perform at the best of your abilities,” Hall said.

As for the upcoming season, senior quarterback Clayton Thorson believes the facility has given the team an added advantage and further motivation.

“It does a lot for us, it’s cool to see guys want to come in and do extra work, watch extra film,” Thorson said. “I think it’s going to make us a better football team in the end.”

Clayton Thorson, Nate Hall, and Montre Hartage talked to the press yesterday. Here are some highlights from their availabilities.

Three of Northwestern’s senior leaders were at the Chicago Marriott yesterday to discuss the 2018 season. Full stories will be on our site over the next few days, but for now, here are highlights from Clayton Thorson, Nate Hall, and Montre Hartage when they took spoke to the media.

Clayton Thorson

On his wedding: “Did a bunch of dancing, jumping around, it was a lot of fun. I told my wife [one thing] I won’t do is bring a football.”

On his knee and injury status after tearing his ACL in the Music City Bowl: “My goal has always been to play on August 30 and our doctors are doing a great job of putting me in the best chance to do that. I’m setting myself up in a good spot to do that, sometimes things are out of my control but I’m starting to feel like myself again. I’ve been cleared for everything in camp.”

On his current physical limitations: “None, nothing.”

On the offense: “We’re returning seven starters and we have Jeremy Larkin stepping in for Justin Jackson, we have Cam Green, we have a lot of guys that can step up. The guys at receiver have really stepped up this summer. We have great competitive depth [chuckles].”

On Jeremy Larkin: “He has these pigeon toes that make it hard for him to go down. [Mimes Larkin’s running style] That’s why he doesn’t go down. Alex Spanos [Northwestern strength coach] calls him pigeon. It’s awesome.”

On his goals for camp: “To get the ball out quicker. In the first five games of the year we had 30 sacks, and that’s on me and the o-line. But in the last eight we only had eight. That’s a massive improvement and something I need to work on [consistently].”

Nate Hall

On his knee injury/rehab: “I’m feeling good, I’m taking it day by day. At this point in the process you have to take it day by day, you have to reevaluate yourself, understand your weaknesses and try to strengthen those up so you can play to the best of your ability come week one. But everything’s going well right now, everybody seems optimistic and I’m optimistic.”

On his connection with Paddy Fisher: “It’s the chemistry you develop on and off the field and in practice. Just to know that I can call something or I can look at Paddy and we can just make eye contact and understand what’s going on, and I can trust him to be in the gap and play off of him, that’s the special thing about chemistry in football...just to have that trust and that bond.”

On extending that connection to the third starting linebacker: “It’s Paddy and I’s jobs to bring that third guy along with us, whoever that may be, and develop that chemistry, play fast and physical and know that that guy is going to go out and do it.”

On Blake Gallagher: “Blake was a true freshman last year. People forget how young this kid was— 18 out there playing against 22-year-old guys with 30 starts. Blake’s a real physical player, I think that’s how he sets himself apart. Especially early on in his career he’s coming downhill really hard and smacking people in the mouth.”

On building off of last year’s run defense: “We pride ourselves on stopping the run. Especially in the Big Ten, if you want to win games you have to stop the run. So we have confidence in that, but it’s a new year, new front 7, new offenses with people attacking in different ways.”

Montre Hartage

On safeties graduating and its effect on his leadership: “I think initially just becoming more vocal as a leader. I know that we have a lot of young guys who are coming in and trying to fill those roles so just being more vocal and teaching guys the way of how we do things.”

On JR Pace: “A guy like JR brings a lot of energy to the table, he’s dynamic in different ways. I’m looking forward to him stepping in, he’s one of my younger guys from Georgia and we’ve developed a relationship over time...he will have the opportunity to potentially step into the role and dominate.”

On coming in as a late recruit, now being an NFL prospect: “It’s always been a day one goal that I wanted to accomplish even as a young kid, now I’ve been given the opportunity to showcase my talent on platforms such as Northwestern and the Big Ten...I think it gives me leverage to showcase what I can bring to the table.”

On the mental challenge of the three straight overtime games last year: “Back to back to back just...being at a position where you have to compete each down and win in order to succeed and to be looked at as a potential competitor in the Big Ten.”

More on the overtime games and how they were able to be prepared for them: “In the OT games, when we need a stop, when we need a play, guys step up...it shows our situational awareness.”

On Thorson’s strengths: “Definitely the intangible skills such as leadership and his decision making. He’s the guy. He has to be the leader, he has to put guys in the right situation, he has to build chemistry with guys and I think that’s the overarching theme that he has built for the offense.”

No. 18’s recovery is still going to plan, according to Fitzgerald.

CHICAGO— Pat Fitzgerald has been keeping his cards close to the chest when it comes to Clayton Thorson’s injury status. That trend continued Monday at Big Ten Media Days.

Asked about the health of Northwestern’s signal-caller, Fitzgerald was hopeful that he would be able to participate in the Aug. 30 matchup with Big Ten foe Purdue but didn’t give a definitive answer.

“That’s certainly the goal,” Fitzgerald said, although he emphasized that NCAA rules prohibit him from watching Thorson throw. Fitz joked that “[I’ve] seen him roll out without a football, but I can’t watch him with the football.”

Despite Fitzgerald not putting a timeline on Thorson’s exact return date, he feels that Thorson looks “night and day” from what he saw in the spring.

Thorson’s teammate on the opposite side of the ball, cornerback Montre Hartage, continues to be impressed with Thorson’s work with his rehab, stating that Nate Hall’s “Comeback Chronicles” Instagram series that features Thorson at times shows the amount of work that he’s putting in.

We’ll see how Thorson’s rehab progresses as the team enters fall camp next week.

Fitz commented on the new facilities and the impact of sports gambling legislation on the players.

Northwestern’s head coach spoke to the media on the first day of Big Ten media days in Chicago, addressing a variety of topics, though nothing related to Clayton Thorson’s health (or any roster specifics). Here are some highlights from his opening press conference:

Fitzgerald opened his session with a little bit of bragging about Northwestern’s off field accomplishments: “Another stellar academic year team GPA of 3.2. Team record. And obviously led the conference in academic All Big Ten performers and distinguished scholars and led the nation in APR in graduation success rates.”

He also commented on the momentum Northwestern has coming into the year: “To have the longest winning streak [of a power 5] football team right now with eight.. and 27 wins in our last 3 years is our program’s best. A lot of positive momentum obviously in the classroom and on the field.”

On the new lakeside facilities: “We’ve been in there for roughly about five and a half weeks now, and to see the improvement and efficiency and the day-to-day opportunities for our guys as we’re now fully integrated to our campus. We’re not quite sure how great it’s going to be yet this fall because this summer’s been absolutely spectacular.”

Fitz hailed linebacker Paddy Fisher’s ability, joking about comparisons that are made to himself: Asked if Fisher resembled a “baby FItz”, he said, “I don’t think that’s fair for him. He’s a much better athlete.”

Fitzgerald emphasized the challenge that comes with the team’s opener being a road Big Ten game: “Anytime you go on the road to play a conference opponent, regardless if it’s September or November, it’s a huge challenge.”

On challenges that could come with the legalization of sports gambling: “[It’s] important that we educate our guys and the understanding of the issues that surround gambling and understand from a standpoint of what may end up happening to them in dorms, people asking them questions that maybe they’ve never been asked before.”

Fitzgerald doesn’t quite see the talent imbalance between the West and East conferences that many do, praising the quality of the institutions and coaching in the West division, noting the addition of Scott Frost.

Football is rapidly approaching.

Don’t look now, but Big Ten media days are back, signifying an annual kickoff of sorts for the football season. Big Ten coaches and players will gather in Chicago to discuss offseason storylines and give the media a chance to ask some questions after a dead period in the beginning of the summer. Northwestern will appear on the first day, bringing Pat Fitzgerald, Clayton Thorson, Montre Hartage and Nate Hall downtown for the festivities.

Media days usually don’t bring too much actual news, but they provide a forum to ask about injuries, position battles and general questions with fall camps on the horizon. Jim Harbaugh and P.J. Fleck will probably make more headlines than Fitz, but it’s at least exciting to have some new quotes to ponder and satisfy our football needs for the next month or so until football is truly back. Plus, there’s bingo.

For Northwestern, the main question is Clayton Thorson’s health, and whether he’ll be able to play Week 1 against Purdue Aug. 30. It’s unclear how much Fitz and Thorson will disclose (probably not much), but there are other storylines too. Who will start at safety and superback? Who has impressed this summer? How has the transition to the sparkling lakeside facility been?

We may not get answers, but we’ll at least ask.

The tradition lives on.

Entering his 13th season as the head football coach at Northwestern, Pat Fitzgerald is a media day veteran. He sticks to the script, often dropping some of the many phrases he’s made his own over his tenure as the head coach. Here at Inside NU, we’ve made it an annual tradition to compile those catchphrases into a B-I-N-G-O board. After hitting nine out of the 20 squares last year, BINGO is back in a major way ahead of tomorrow’s Big Ten Media Days in Chicago.

Here’s the board:

We’ll update the board once Fitzgerald’s press conference concludes, and hopefully we’ll be 1-0.
